A Growing Movement for Animal Justice

Fur farms are still operating in Quebec, and thousands of animals continue to suffer for their pelts. On Saturday, January 31, residents of Quebec are coming together at Place Vauquelin – 275 Notre-Dame St. East to demand an end to fur farming in the province and to show support for the lawsuit brought by Animal Justice and The Fur-Bearers against the Quebec government: Quebec Fur Farming Ban Lawsuit.

Quebec Fur Farms: A History of Cruelty

Animal Justice has a history of exposing the suffering at Quebec fur farms. In 2022, we released shocking images of miserable minks and foxes at two fur farms and filed a legal complaint with the government. This cruelty is not new. In 2014, the Montreal SPCA conducted a criminal investigation into a Quebec fur farm, finding filthy, dangerous conditions and severe untreated injuries. The farmer was convicted on three counts of animal cruelty. Fur farms across other provinces also cause extreme suffering to minks, foxes, chinchillas, lynxes, and wolves.

Quebec’s Government Knew & Chose Inaction

The government’s own internal documents, obtained by the Montreal SPCA, show they have been fully aware of the systematic cruelty at Quebec fur farms. These documents show that since 2022, experts with Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture (MAPAQ) have reported that the conditions in which foxes and minks are raised “do not meet the biological needs of the animals” and that “it is not possible to raise animals in intensive farming conditions on fur farms while ensuring their welfare.”

In one email, a Ministry staff member wrote that “the industry is in decline, has very low social acceptability and does not ensure the welfare of these animals,” and urged their director to help “find the quickest and most effective solution possible” to ban fur farming.

Despite these warnings and consistent advocacy from animal groups, the government has failed to take action.

Why We’re Suing the Quebec Government

Animal Justice and The Fur-Bearers are asking the court to intervene because the government’s ongoing failure to act—in direct contradiction of its own evidence—is unreasonable and unlawful.

How You Can Get Involved

Why This Matters

Every fur coat, every trim, every pelt represents a life taken. This demonstration is a chance to turn outrage into action and show the Quebec government that Quebecers will not stand by while animals suffer. Let’s show support for the legal challenge brought by Animal Justice and The Fur-Bearers to end the unacceptable cruelty happening on farms across the province. Let’s make it clear: Fur farming has no place in Quebec. Together, we can push for justice and an end to this cruel industry.
