Canadians are calling on the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food to finally end the live export of horses for slaughter.
A federal e-petition has launched, calling on the Minister to act now to end the live export of horses for slaughter. The Liberal Party committed to banning the practice during the 2021 election. In his December 16, 2021 mandate letter to the Minister, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau directed her to make good on the commitment and finally put an end to the practice. Despite the promises, due to the Minister’s inaction, horses continue to be shipped out of Canada to Japan to be slaughtered and eaten as raw horse sashimi.
Thousands of live horses are exported from Alberta and Manitoba every year to be killed overseas. Their journey is nothing short of torturous. These gentle giants are forced to endure long flights confined in tiny crates. The entire trip can take more than 24 hours, during which they have no opportunity to eat food, drink water, or rest. The conditions are stressful, dangerous, and sometimes deadly.
Petition e-4190 was initiated by Canadian icon Jann Arden, who has been very vocal about the industry and has helped bring much-needed media attention to the cause through her #HorseShit campaign. It can be signed by Canadian residents or citizens, and with enough signatures, MP Alistair MacGregor will present the petition to the House of Commons and compel the government to address the issue with a response.
Continued delay to make good on the government’s commitment will doom more horses to suffer and die needlessly. It’s time for Minister Bibeau to ban the cruel export of live horses for slaughter immediately.
