Animal Justice recently coordinated a national demonstration across 12 Canadian cities. Our dedicated advocates took to the streets to protest Sobeys’ broken cage-free promise. Frustrated stakeholders gathered peacefully to demand accountability from the major grocery chain. Shockingly, a safety crisis unfolded during our peaceful demonstration outside the Sobeys Forest Lawn location in Calgary, Alberta.
According to reports, the driver of a red pick-up truck appeared to intentionally drive onto the curb and grassy area. The vehicle came within mere feet of striking several peaceful demonstrators, sparking an investigation by the Calgary Police Service. This dangerous incident could have resulted in severe injury or death right next to Sobeys’ property.
Sobeys Executives Decline Urgent Safety Meeting
Following the terrifying event, Animal Justice reached out directly to Sobeys executives, board chair, and the head of corporate sustainability. We requested an immediate, brief virtual meeting to discuss the safety of community members.
Unfortunately, while Head of Corporate Sustainability Joshua Goodman asked for information about the incident, he ignored our request to connect, and Sobeys CEO Pierre St-Laurent and other members of their leadership team did not respond. By refusing to open lines of communication, the company is choosing corporate profits over public safety and is ignoring a serious threat to peaceful advocates that happened outside one of its stores.
A Decade of Broken Promises
This public outrage stems directly from stakeholder frustration with Sobeys. The grocery giant made a high-profile, decade-old promise to eliminate cruel cages from its egg supply chain. However, roughly 80 percent of Sobeys eggs still come from confined, suffering hens. Instead of fulfilling its corporate responsibility, Sobeys continues to drag its feet and hide from accountability.
Animal Justice will not be deterred. We must show Sobeys that ignoring animal cruelty and community safety is completely unacceptable.
