CALGARY—Calgary Police are investigating an incident over the weekend, where the driver of a pick-up truck drove onto the curb and nearly plowed down people who were peacefully demonstrating.
As was the case in 11 other Canadian cities on Saturday, a group of protesters in Calgary were exercising their legal right to free expression, drawing attention to Sobeys’ failure to keep a decade-old promise to stop sourcing eggs from hens confined in tiny wire cages on factory farms.
During the Calgary protest near Sobeys’ Forest Lawn location, in what appeared to be an intentional act, a red pick-up truck drove up over the curb onto the grassy area where protesters were standing, coming within a few feet of the people gathered there. The near-hit left many participants shaken and concerned for their safety.
The incident was reported to the Calgary Police Service, and Animal Justice is of the understanding that police are investigating.
“These compassionate citizens were legally exercising their democratic rights, bringing attention to Sobeys’ failure to keep its promise to stop cruelly confining hens in cages, ” said Camille Labchuk, lawyer and executive director of Animal Justice.
“It’s deeply saddening to learn their safety was put at risk when a driver nearly hit them—this dangerous act could have resulted in serious injury or even death.”
Protests occurred without incident on Saturday in Edmonton, Halifax, London, Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Regina, St. John’s, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.
