Animal Justice is thrilled to announce an exclusive contest for tickets to the first Canadian screenings of the film Unlocking the Cage at the Hot Docs festival in early May in Toronto. The film screens on Monday, May 2 at 3:30 pm, Tuesday, May 3 at 9:30 pm, and Sunday, May 8 at 10:00 am.
Unlocking the Cage follows animal rights lawyer Steven Wise of the Nonhuman Rights Project, which recently made history by filing the first lawsuits that seek to transform an animal from a thing with no rights to a legal person with protections. Legendary documentary filmmakers Chris Hegedus and D. A. Pennebaker zero in on the organization’s first lawsuits filed on behalf of four captive chimpanzees in the state of New York that could forever transform the way our legal institutions consider animals.
As Canada’s only animal law organization, Animal Justice is proud to support Unlocking the Cage. The film has already received a stunning reception at film festivals and theatres, with broadcast release on HBO and BBC scheduled for later in 2016. Unlocking the Cage is bringing unprecedented public attention to legal rights for animals – an idea whose time has come.
