Animal Justice was in court last week fighting against the government’s effort to shut down our Quebec fur farming lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed by Animal Justice and the Fur-Bearers against the Quebec government for failing to take any actions to stop fur farming cruelty—even after they recognized it likely violates Quebec’s animal welfare laws.
Government documents obtained by the Montreal SPCA show what we’ve known all along: fur farming is inherently cruel. Since at least 2022, officials have been reporting that the conditions on fur farms fail to meet the animals’ most basic needs. They also recommended fur farming be banned.
Quebec Fur Farming: It’s Time for a Ban
Animals on fur farms endure lives of relentless suffering. They are confined to tiny, barren wire cages where they cannot express natural behaviours like swimming, burrowing, or exploring. The result is profound psychological distress, often leading to frantic pacing, self-mutilation, and even cannibalism.
Their deaths are equally horrific. Minks are typically gassed or have their necks snapped, while foxes are killed by anal electrocution.
Instead of defending their failure to take any steps to oversee or ban fur farming, the government tried to dismiss our lawsuit. However, we won’t be deterred. Our legal team is pushing forward to secure a safer future for fur-bearing animals.

- If you live in Quebec, contact the Quebec Minister of Agriculture and demand an immediate ban on all fur farming in the province.
