Protesters at National Assembly Demand End to Quebec Fur Farming

QUEBEC CITY—Quebecers are gathering outside the National Assembly on Tuesday (June 9) to demand an end to fur farming in the province and to show support for a lawsuit brought by Animal Justice and The Fur-Bearers against the Quebec government.

The two national animal advocacy groups filed an application for judicial review in Quebec Superior Court in November, arguing that the provincial government is unlawfully allowing fur farming to continue despite knowing that the practice likely violates Québec’s animal welfare laws.

In fur farms, animals including foxes, minks, and chinchillas, suffer in tiny wire cages. They are killed by being electrocuted or gassed to death before being skinned.

Since 2022, MAPAQ’s own officials have warned that Quebec fur farms fail to meet the biological needs of animals and don’t ensure their welfare and an internal report recommends a ban.

Quebec government officials acknowledge a ban would have no economic impact given the industry’s steep decline. The three opposition parties in Quebec have also committed to ban fur farming.

Quebec’s permit requirement for fur farms exists on the books but has never been brought into force.
