Police Fail Animal Victim in Prince Albert Bestiality, Cruelty Case

PRINCE ALBERT, SK.–Animal Justice is alarmed by media reports of the Prince Albert Police Department’s handling of serious allegations of animal cruelty and bestiality that left a kitten dead in Saskatchewan after being given away to a man. According to reports, police interviewed the suspect, who then fled, and have indicated they do not plan to proactively investigate further unless new tips emerge.

It is troubling that police appear to be treating this case with less urgency than recent investigations into animal cruelty in other jurisdictions, such as Winnipeg, where the major crimes unit was engaged to ensure accountability.

“The allegations surrounding this kitten’s heartbreaking death are deeply troubling, and the public response from the Prince Albert Police Department is inadequate. Police must immediately engage forensic and veterinary specialists to do an autopsy on the kitten to determine the cause of death and whether sexual abuse occurred. Bestiality and animal cruelty are both grave Criminal Code offences, and violence against animals deserves to be taken as seriously as harm to a human,” said Camille Labchuk, lawyer and executive director at Animal Justice.

“We urge police to more thoroughly investigate and enforce the law to ensure no further animals can be harmed. Furthermore, police should determine whether there is a need to share further details with the community to protect other animals from being abused.”
