Montreal Protesters to Unfurl Giant ‘Receipt of Cruelty’ at IGA

MONTREAL—A towering “Receipt of Cruelty” will be unfurled outside IGA Complexe Desjardins on Saturday, March 7, as protesters mark the 10th anniversary of Sobeys’ (which operates IGA in Quebec) pledge to go 100% cage-free. The oversized prop receipt itemizes exactly where the grocery giant’s priorities lie.

Local protesters are looking to the company’s new CEO, Pierre St-Laurent (who lives in Montreal), to finally act on the company’s longstanding cage-free commitment. Sobeys first pledged to source 100% cage-free eggs by 2025. The company has since backtracked, citing affordability concerns, even as it posts record profits.

Most eggs sold at Sobeys and IGA continue to come from hens confined in cramped wire cages. Polling shows 80% of Canadians support ending cage use.

Photo and Interview opportunities will be available on-site.
