CALGARY—Animal Justice has filed a legal complaint following this weekend’s killing of a horse who was injured in a chuckwagon race.
The complaint calls on the Calgary Humane Society (CHS), which is responsible for enforcing Alberta’s animal protection laws within the city, to investigate this incident and hold those responsible for causing distress, injury, and suffering accountable.
The statistics year after year at the Stampede prove that chuckwagon racing is an inherently dangerous activity for the horses involved, placing great strain on animals’ bodies and involving a high risk of injury and death. Horses are killed due to the Calgary Stampede’s chuckwagon racing events almost every year.
“It is 2025, but these completely preventable killings continue to happen,” said Camille Labchuk, lawyer and executive director of Animal Justice. “It’s absurd that Stampede organizers permit this brutal spectacle to continue where horses are doomed to die nearly every year.”
”Most Canadians—and most Albertans—are opposed to cruel rodeo events that cause distress, suffering, and death to animals who deserve better. It’s time to end this outdated spectacle of rodeo abuse that cows and horses are subjected to every summer.”
