Sobeys is becoming known across Canada for cage cruelty, sparking Sobeys protests across the country. Nearly ten years ago, the company promised to eliminate cages by 2025. Now with less than one month left in the year, the company still hasn’t published a cage-free plan while 80 percent of Sobeys’ eggs continue to come from caged hens.
On November 29, protesters gathered in 10 cities across the country demanding action. These demonstrations mark the fourth nationwide action since August in what has become the largest corporate cage-free campaign in Canadian history. Coast to coast, consumers and advocates exposed Sobeys’ cage cruelty using megaphones and signs reading “Sobeys Home Grown Factory Farming” and “Premium Prices for Factory Farmed Eggs.” These large-scale protests drew media coverage from Global News and CityNews.
Sobeys claims they value the lives of animals, yet an undercover investigation by Animal Justice revealed shocking conditions at a Sobeys supplier farm. Millions of hens are trapped in filthy, overcrowded cages, each with barely more space than a sheet of paper. These horrific conditions are unacceptable and Sobeys’ cage cruelty will not go ignored.
The Canadian public is growing increasingly frustrated with Sobeys’ broken animal welfare claims, with each protest demonstrating that animal cruelty is bad for business. Pressure is building as concerned consumers watch Sobeys fail to publish a plan for yet another year.
Every voice makes it harder for Sobeys to ignore its responsibility to publish a cage-free plan.
