Cruelty-Free Bags: Animal Justice Fall 2020 Favourites

Guest blog by Hannah Sotropa.

Fall has just begun, and we are gearing up for our 3rd annual #Voiceless4AnimalJustice campaign. Last year’s campaign was a huge success, due in part to generous sponsors such as Doshi Shop and Pixie Mood — two compassionate brands that create beautiful and sustainable bags without the use of animals, as well as The Grinning Goat: Canada’s vegan fashion boutique.

From backpacks to totes, many bags on the market are still made with leather and other animal materials. Sadly, there is nothing kind about how animals are raised and killed for fashion in Canada and around the world.

Leather is often a byproduct of the meat industry, where the vast majority of animals are raised in cruel factory farm conditions that cause vast quantities of pollution and the release of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

Animals in fur farms suffer in filthy, tiny wire cages and are killed using painful and archaic methods. Wild animals trapped for their fur are often left to suffer in agonizing leg-hold traps and snares.

Inspired by our friends at Doshi Shop, Pixie Mood, and The Grinning Goat, we’ve put together this list of our favourite bags from animal-friendly brands that we love!

Doshi Shop – Debut Paper Backpack

As seen in Eluxe Magazine, Doshi Shop’s, first ever, recyclable backpack, is all the rage this year. This versatile bag is the first edition of Doshi Shop’s Activist line, and 5% of revenue goes to charities helping animals, people and the environment! No cows harmed in the making of this bag.

Pixie Mood – Clara Tote

You can never go wrong with a classic, minimalist look! Whether you’re out for groceries or out with friends, this Pixie Mood tote is ready for a day/night out. Get ready to sport this beauty in hand or over the shoulder using its elegantly skinny double straps.

Matt & Nat – Beverly Belt Bag

Matt & Nat is a vegan brand committed to sustainability and promoting a cruelty-free lifestyle. Just like this hands-free belt bag, the interior lining of all Matt & Nat bags are made from 100% recycled bottles. In total, Matt & Nat has recycled 8 million bottles annually and continues to prove that sustainable and vegan fashion-with-compassion, is accessible and adorable!

Gunas New York – Jared

The Jared backpack is part of Gunas New York’s classically vintage inspired collection. These functional pieces make every occasion something special, without compromise. All products are certified vegan and cruelty-free.

CO-LAB – Loft Triple Crossbody

This Montreal- based company is 100% cruelty-free, and committed to sourcing its materials ethically and responsibly. CO-LAB‘s dainty crossbody bag, made with washed vintage faux leather, has three compartments to store all of your goodies. Feeling like a hand-clutch for the night?
