Game, set, match. Last night, during the Championship tennis match of the National Bank Open at Sobeys Stadium, demonstrators called attention to the pending release of new undercover investigation findings at a Sobeys egg supplier—findings at odds with the company’s longstanding animal welfare commitments.
Overhead the event—filled with celebrities, local media, and international streaming services—an airplane banner displayed SOBEYSDROPPEDTHEBALL.CA, while demonstrators seated in the Sobeys Fresh Zone donned a banner that read, SOBEYS: SERVING CRUELTY.
Sobeys Stalls on Cage-Free Promise
Over 80% of the eggs Sobeys sells to Canadians continue to come from caged hens. Despite repeated calls for action and Sobeys’ own commitment to its original goal to reach 100% cage-free, there have been no public statements indicating Sobeys’ plans to end, or even reduce, cage use in their supply chain.
Recent reporting from the company even revealed the same 17.5% cage-free progress first reported back in 2021. The company’s only policy update this year was to backtrack and add new kinds of cages to its animal welfare goals.
In response to this lack of accountability, 90 demonstrators across four cities took to the streets on Saturday, August 2nd. They offered Sobeys’ shoppers $20 to experience what life is like for the millions of hens trapped in cages in the grocer’s supply chain. Participants in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto braved the cage.
Take Action for Hens
Now, Animal Justice is beginning to publicize recent video footage from an undercover investigation. Canadians will know the truth behind the eggs on Sobeys’ shelves, and the company’s investors and business partners will know the truth behind a decade of animal welfare claims published in Sobeys’ “sustainable business” reports.
We need your help spreading the word.
