Take Action: Stop the World's First Octopus Factory Farm

Take Action: Stop the World's First Octopus Factory Farm

Companies around the world are racing to develop commercial octopus factory farms. While attempts to farm octopuses have been historically unsuccessful, some businesses are finally getting close to artificially creating the conditions needed for industrial-scale breeding of octopuses. One company, based in Spain’s Canary Islands, reportedly plans to open a facility in 2023 where approximately 60,000 captive octopuses will be confined in pens and slaughtered every year.

Octopus factory farms would be an ethical and environmental disaster for several reasons and there is no current legislation in Canada, the EU, Japan, or Mexico, to protect farmed octopuses.

Octopuses are fascinating, intelligent, and sentient wild animals who will suffer immensely in captivity. Animal Justice is a member of the Aquatic Animal Alliance coalition, which is working to oppose octopus aquaculture internationally and put a halt to these factory farming methods before cruel octopus farms become widespread.

Please join us in urging the Canary Island government to stop the octopus factory farm!
