Canadians will go to the polls and vote in a federal election on September 20, 2021.
Once again, Animal Justice will be putting animal protection issues on the election agenda, and will help ensure animal champions are elected to office so they can give animals a voice in Parliament, and help pass stronger animal protection laws.
Through our initiative Voters for Animals, formerly known as Humane Voters Canada, we’re endorsing dozens of animal-friendly candidates and mobilizing animal advocates to help them get elected.
Historically, animal protection hasn’t been a priority for federal politicians, which has led to significant barriers in passing stronger laws for animals. While other developed nations have been making tremendous strides for animals in recent decades, Canada still has some of the worst animal protection laws in the western world.
But thanks to a recent tide of animal-friendly politicians taking office, we’ve seen the tide begin to turn.
In 2015, seven candidates with animal welfare commitments were elected after being endorsed by Animal Justice. Those politicians helped lead the charge on the most significant improvements to our animal protection laws in the past 100 years, including:
- Banning whale & dolphin captivity
- Outlawing shark fin imports
- Making all forms of bestiality illegal
- Closing animal fighting legal loopholes
And after the 2019 election, even more animal-friendly MPs took office after Animal Justice endorsed dozens of candidates.
Let’s keep the momentum going! Pledge to use your vote for animals via VotersforAnimals.ca and discover how to help get animal champions into office.
