Animal Justice is a national animal law advocacy organization, focused on improving laws and policies to protect animals in Canada. Our team works to pass strong new animal laws at all levels of government, ensures industries and corporations are held accountable for abusing animals, and fights for animals in courtrooms across the country.

We seek an enthusiastic and driven Development Manager to oversee and grow our donor base. The ideal candidate will be passionate about Animal Justice’s mission, and will have a strong background in fundraising strategy and execution in the charitable / nonprofit sector. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to a growing organization working on a cutting-edge social justice issue.

Reports to: Director of Operations and Finance

Work Location: Remote, hybrid, or at Animal Justice’s Toronto office; must be legally permitted to work in Canada

Start Date: As soon as possible

Salary: $70,000 to $90,000 (commensurate with years of experience)

Position Description

  • The Development Manager will be responsible for securing the essential funds that power our ability to transform legal protections for animals.
  • Lead the implementation and strategic direction of a fundraising program geared at ensuring the continued robust growth of the organization.
  • Develop and implement strategies to grow Animal Justice’s individual supporter base.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase monthly and planned giving.
  • Collaborate with the communications team on digital fundraising strategies, including crafting compelling written and visual materials.
  • Maintain and oversee the implementation of the annual fundraising calendar, meeting deadlines on annual digital campaigns and in-person events.
  • Oversee in-person fundraising events in collaboration with events manager.
  • Communicate directly with supporters, developing meaningful, long-term relationships with existing and prospective donors.
  • Work alongside the executive director and director of operations and finance to cultivate strong relationships with existing and prospective major and institutional donors.
  • Identify grant opportunities, and lead the grant application and reporting process.
  • Use our donor database to analyze fundraising efforts, using data to drive decision-making and improve performance. Proactively identify gaps and opportunities.
  • Create regular, accessible reports and analyses of fundraising revenue across all platforms.
  • Oversee other development consultants.

Position Requirements

  • At least three years of experience in fundraising for a nonprofit organization, including in digital fundraising.
  • Understanding of best practices in fundraising in Canada regarding small, mid-level, and major gifts; and digital strategies.
  • Experience with donor management software to maintain supporter records, manage relationships, and analyze supporter data.
  • Familiarity with grant proposals and management.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Experience corresponding directly with supporters.
  • Experience writing fundraising appeals and other development materials, with demonstrated ability to craft strong, compelling narratives and mission-aligned messages.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to inform fundraising strategy. Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and other software, and ability to learn to use new digital tools quickly.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized, with a focus on accuracy.
  • Self-motivated and driven. Comfortable working remotely as well as collaboratively on a team.
  • Ability to travel a few times a year for conferences or team meetings.
  • Strong personal commitment to Animal Justice’s philosophy and mission to help animals in Canada.
